For Best Sample File, Metrologs and Results
PROCEDURES FOR FILLING:
In order to gain maximum efficiency or use of your Sample Files, Metrologs and Petrologs the following procedures should be observed:
1) The cuttings to be as clean, dust free and dry as possible.
2) The proper size cuttings should be sieved by the following screen sizes.
10 MESH - All cuttings larger than this should be discarded, as most of them tend to be whippings and cavings.
20 MESH - All cuttings larger than this can be kept for vialing, however, they are not conducive to adhering to Sample-File.
30 MESH - All cuttings between 20 and 30 mesh should be retained for use in Sample-File.
BELOW 30 MESH - While these cuttings are usually retained for the vials, they should not be used for Sample-File, as the fine dust-like cuttings will prevent the larger cuttings from sticking.
*IF THE FINES OF A PARTICULAR ZONE ARE IMPORTANT, A SECOND SET OF METROLOGS/PETROLOGS SHOULD BE MADE UP.
3) After cuttings have been poured into the correct slot, they should be "gently" tamped down - a finger or a pencil is best. The whole area of sticky back should be covered.
4) After tamping, the card should be turned and tapped to dislodge those pieces which are not stuck firmly.
